About Botanical or Herbal Medicine
Botanical or herbal medicine is “The First Medicine”. It has been around for as long as
humans have looked for ways to heal their health issues. The herbs used in Naturopathic Medicine mostly have their roots in American and European cultures though some of the herbs are originally from Traditional Chinese medicine or from the rain forests of South America. (See the link for Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for more information about using herbs in relation to acupuncture theory.)
Botanical medicine is a powerful therapy that can be a safe and effective treatment for improving your health. Botanical medicine generally has fewer side effects than conventional medicines and it can be used as a substitute for or to enhance conventional treatments (such as prescription medications that you may already be taking). Herbs can be helpful to treat a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions and diseases including: hormonal imbalances (thyroid, blood sugar and women's hormonal issues), to help fight infection and improve your immune function to prevent disease, and to enhance energy and wellbeing. Lastly, botanicals can be used as mood enhancers to help deal with anxiety, depression and sleep issues, among others.
Naturopathic Doctors are the only doctors who are trained in the use of western botanical medicine in their medical education. At WNHA we provide or recommend herbs in many different forms, including capsules and tinctures (herbal liquids). If needed, we can custom blend a mixture of herbs that is suited for your individual needs. We strive to use only the finest herbs from the most reputable sources and attempt to use organic herbs when possible.
